POEM: name

BY LINDI-ANN HEWITT-COLEMAN

it seems i inadvertently
took his name
that day in the forest
when we got married

i found out a year later
early morning at the voting station
that i no longer existed
that for the past year
i had been using the name
of a woman long gone
that the woman who birthed my daughter
was not the me that i had thought i was

i went to have it changed back
filled in the forms –
had to motivate why
i wanted to be who i was before

but i am not sure you can be
completely the same
after obliteration.
