POEM: By the Liesbeeck river

Under a subway
onto a paved and shaded path;
green grass and nasturtiums,
a wooden bridge and
the creamy delight
of pink-edged frangipani.

A noticeboard
warns us of floods
and the danger of slipping and falling,
but we walk with dry feet
and the stream keeps
biddable between its banks

On a radio
someone is singing in Japanese,
choir-boy-pure notes ripple
as they tell of long-ago sorrows.
And in the trees we hear
the liquid call
of a red-eyed dove.
