POEM: Teach him to be her

BY JANET KALI

Mama said the right way to raise a son
Is to teach him to be a woman
So in the face of a husband
I sought the nurturing of a wife
She said, teach him to be a mother
Let him learn to show care without the need for compensation
Let him learn the responsibility of carrying a household
Teach him to be a daughter
Let him learn to be dutiful to those around him
Let him learn to handle the big pot on the charcoal stove
Teach him to be a sister
Let him learn to lull the young ones
Let him learn to help shoulder a mother’s chores
Teach him to be a woman and he will learn
What it means to be strong
To be capable
To rise beyond expectations
Teach him to be a woman and he will know
How to truly love
Then teach him that to be a man
Is to embrace this in a woman
Mama said only greatness
Can love such a force as woman
